In the state of New York, you may qualify for low cost health insurance whether you are a small business, sole proprietor or individual.

In 2000 the NY Legislature enacted regulations in response to the Governor’s proposal to make available comprehensive insurance coverage for New York workers and their families who are uninsured. The name of the program is Healthy NY.

This program helps the small business owners (businesses with 50 or fewer employees) to provide health insurance to their employees and their families. Additionally, Workers who are unable to purchase insurance through their employer because the employer doesn’t offer insurance and the sole proprietor may purchase coverage directly though Health NY.

All HMO’s in the state of New York offer standardized health benefit package that is made affordable through the sponsorship of NY State. This makes it more affordable for small employers and uninsured employees.

There are certain eligibility requirements for each section:

Small Employer

Business must be located in New York
The business must have 50 or less eligible employees
30% of employees must earn $34,000 or less
The business must not have provided group health insurance to employees in last 12 months (with certain stipulations)
50% of eligible employee participation and at least one earns $34,000 or less
Employer must contribute 50% of premium
The employer must offer plan to employees working 20 hours or more and earning $34,000 or less

Individual and Sole Proprietor guidelines:

The individual must live in the state of New York
Must be currently employed or have been within the last 12 months
Employer does not provide health insurance
Have not health insurance for past 12 month period
Ineligible for Medicare
The annual household income must meet the Healthy NY Income Guidelines

Taking care of your health. It’s not so hard to do once you put your mind to it. You’ve got to make the commitment.

The very most important thing you can do for your health is not to smoke or to quit if you do. It is well known that smoking causes many types of cancer, heart disease, emphysema, just to name a few. Anyone who has ever been a smoker will tell you that quitting is a very hard thing to do. It is a very hard thing to do, but not impossible. There are many resources out there today to help you. There are patches, lozenges, anti depressants, books, websites, telephone hotlines, support groups and many other things. You can quit gradually or cold-turkey. Whatever works best for you, but just quit.

Probably the second most important component of good health is good nutrition. Eat less red meat and more fruits and vegetables. Eat less starches and sugars and more whole grains. Drink plenty of water. Drink alcohol only in moderation. Eat as many organic foods as possible. Organic foods are those grown without pesticides, hormones or antibiotics. Who needs those anyway, we get enough of those from the environment. Organic foods are becoming easier and easier to find these days. If you are lucky enough to have a health food store in your neighborhood, shop there. Even in the grocery stores these days organic foods are becoming more prevalent. They cost more, but you can pay for them now or pay the doctor later.

The third component to good health is exercise. We should get some form of aerobic exercise several times a week. Ride a bike, run or just take a brisk walk. Also we need to perform some form of weight-bearing exercise several times a week. Join a gym if there is one near your home or work. Most gyms provide personal trainers, who are a great source of information and will also teach you how to perform an exercise correctly so as to prevent injury. If you’re the type who likes to do things on your own, the resources out there are many. There are books, videos, websites, magazines and TV shows and all sorts of home equipment to help you get going.

Also, remember to get enough rest. Most of us require eight hours of sleep per night. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time every day.

Do what you can to reduce stress. Buy yourself some flowers. Listen to music. Practice the religion of your choice, Meditate. Get a pet, they have been proven to lower blood pressure. Find a hobby. Read a book. Do something nice for yourself and you will be nicer to others.
